About Us Page

Hello I would like to introduce myself. My name is Michael Wahl, I'm 44 years old. We are about 1 hour north East of Sacramento and 1.5 hours Northwest of Lake Tahoe California in a small town called Penn Valley. We have fantastic deer hunting in these foothills. We also are about 30 minutes away from the best duck and goose hunting in the western United States in a place called the Butte Sink.
I have been hunting and fishing locally for 36 years. We get to sharpen our outdoor skills here in the Northern California foothills where the average rifle shot is less than 100 yards and the average bow shot is around 40 yards.
Below you will find some pictures of successful hunts and fishing trips, each picture will have a brief description with it.
We hope you are enjoying our site.

my best archery equipment bow hunted buck

This buck was taken by me, Mike Wahl, (Owner), on Sept 7, 2002 at our ranch here in Penn Valley, CA (about 1 hour northeast of Sacramento, CA. I used an 80# Alpine Teton Lite with a Cobra sight, Bodoodle Pro 500 Lite rest, Gold Tip Hunter 75/95 arrows fletched with AAE Elite 4" vanes, Winners Choice bowstring, Gold Tip Gladiator 100 grain broadheads, Truball Single ball release.
The shot was 27 yards and I hit him 2 ribs back from the elbow. He only went 40 yards straight down a cliff. It was fun 2 hour drag up the cliff by myself. He weighed 252 pounds on the hoof. His rack is 25" wide and 20" tall.

second Best bow hunted buck ever
This Muley buck was taken by bow in Northern California between Chester and Susanville in 1984. This is about 3.2 hours north by northwest of Sacramento, CA. He scored 185 3/8 Pope & Young. I shot him in the forehead with a Martin Cougar set at 68# with 125 grain Satellite 4 blade broad head. I don't remember the arrow shaft but it was an Orange Easton. It was one of the first times I ever hunted from a tree stand. I was over looking a watering hole by a creek and sitting in a black walnut tree at about 3 yards away and 15 feet up. This deer weighed 213 lbs. field dressed. I had also taken his sire 2 years earlier with a 30-30 that I had borrowed from an uncle, he scored 178 1/3 Boone & Crocket. (1982)

Forked horn buck
This small forky was taken 1995 in Penn Valley. This is about 1.2 hours Northeast of Sacramento, CA.  I made a well placed (lucky) shot in the neck while in a full run right at me at about 120 yards. It had just tried to get my wife to lock horns with him so she chased it off with a manzanita branch (don't ya love the rut). He was shot with a restored  8 mm. Mauser from W.W.II. I used a Bushnell 3x9x40 scope. (1995)

Small forked horn buck taken with archery equipment
This is another forked horn buck at (at least it is a tall one) taken from the same Penn Valley, CA area as above. Once again by archery hunting Ken And I have filled one of our tags. Ken harvested this buck using a Martin Lynx Bow twin cam at 70# and 31" draw length, Satellite broadhead, on a Beeman arrow using a standard Cobra caliper type release. (1997)

Limit of Widgeon, Wooduck, and Golden Eye ducks from the Yuba River California

This a limit of Widgeon, Wood duck, and Golden eye ducks that Ken and I took off of the feather river near Marysville, CA. We were about 40 minutes north of Sacramento, CA. This time we used my two dogs Tonka on the left and Cookie on the right. As you can see we do prefer Springers for all our bird hunting. (1997)

Limits of Honkers and some ducks from the Yuba River in Browns Valley California

Here are two limits of Honkers that Tonka retrieved from the Yuba River area of Browns Valley, CA in 1996. This is about 1 hour north of Sacramento, CA. Ken and I downed these honkers in a weed choked dredger pond. The ducks were downed in the Yuba River itself. This river is a class 2+ rapids area and the dog didn't lose a single bird. The birds from left to right are 4 Honkers, 1 Mallard, 1 Goldeneye, and 5 Woodducks. (1996)

Snow Geese and Speckeled Belly Geese from Richvale California

Here are a few Snow and Speckled Belly Geese taken with my brother in law Ken Tarr and his dogs Levi (left) and Sebastian (right). We shot these geese on the Manis ranch in Richvale, CA area. This is about 1.5 hours north of Sacramento, CA on Hwy. 99. We use Springers because of their perfect temperament eagerness to please and ability to learn.  (1997)

Rio Grand Tom Turkey

This Turkey was taken by Rollins Lake near Chicago Park, CA. This is about 1 hour north of Sacramento, CA. It responded to just a few light hen yelps and came running in to about 30 yards. Then he stopped dead cold behind a thick Manzanita bush and wouldn't budge. I took the shot and dropped him instantly. I used a 12 gauge Remington 870 Express Magnum loaded with Federal Classic Steel #4. That copper plated steel shot was just the trick to punch through that thick brush. I had been trying to get this particular Tom for 3 days. I finally got him on the 3rd. day at about 12 noon. He had a 11 3/4" beard and 1 3/4" spurs but he only weighed 19 3/4 pounds (1996)

Bow hunted Rio Grand Tom Turkey

This nice fat tom was taken with an Alpine Teton Lite, 80# draw weight and a draw length of 30". At about 27 yards I used a Gold Tip Hunter arrow tipped with a Gold Tip Gladiator 100gr. broadhead in April of 2000. My brother in law Ken and I took this tom out of the Eldorado Hills area southeast of Folsom Lake. He had 10 3/4" beard, and 1 5/8" spurs. (2000)

Rooster Pheasants from Richvale California

These are a few pheasants that we harvested, with our Springers. Thank you Richard Manis for letting us hunt on your family ranch. The ranch is near a small farming community called Richvalle in Northern California. This is about 1.6 hours north of Sacramento (1996)

Striped Bass from the Sacramento River

We even have great fishing here in Northern California. These two 12 & 14 lb. Striped Bass were caught from the bank on the Sacramento River in Colusa, CA. I used cut Anchovies and fished from the bank. (1997)

Limits of Brook Trout from Mineral, California

Here are some Brook Trout (4 limits) taken from Battle Creek near Mineral, CA. This is just about 6 miles from Lassen National Park In Northern California. Pictured from left to right are Dave Armstrong, Ricardo Madrigal, Angel Wahl, and Michael Wahl (myself). These fish were taken with Night crawlers and Silver Panther Martins.

Russian Boar with Mike Wahl and Ken Tarr

04/02 I took this Russian Boar in the Stony Gorge Reservoir area of Northern California. This area is north of Sacramento, about 1 hour, on the West side of the upper Sacramento Valley west of Maxwell, CA. He weighed 250 pounds. Pictured from left to right are: Mike Wahl (me) and Ken Tarr, my hunting partner. This was in April with a very heavy, ground level, cloud cover. Visibility was about 100 yards.
I shot this boar with a Savage Rifle in .270 caliber with a 150 grain Nosler Partition bullet. I shot him at about 75 yards in the opening of a very brushy draw.
